What causes dandruff and how to get rid of visible flakes?
Dandruff is more common than you might think. In fact, 45% of women will get dandruff at some point in their lives.* That's right almost HALF!
That means it’s nothing to be embarrassed about – good news, right? In even better news, with our new Phytoclear range, it doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice your beauty regime either.
So, you’re probably thinking: how do I know if I have dandruff, what are the signs of dandruff, and what causes dandruff in the first place?
HOW DO I KNOW IF HAVE DANDRUFF?
Let’s start with a little bit of science. Everyone has a naturally-occurring microbe on their scalp called Malassezia globosa which feeds on the oils secreted by our hair follicles. Most of the time, this totally natural process doesn’t cause any problems – but occasionally it can cause trouble and speed up the natural, healthy cycle of producing new skin cells and shedding old ones.
Put simply, that’s all dandruff really is; old skin cells being shed more frequently than usual. This makes the signs of dandruff easy to spot:
• White, oily-looking flakes of skin dotted through your hair and possibly visible on your shoulders
• An especially itchy, or scaly scalp
While dandruff might feel pretty uncomfortable and might leave you feeling less than great about your hair, there’s no need to panic if you have it – you can’t catch it from other people, and it won’t cause you any harm.
WHAT CAUSES DANDRUFF?
One of the most important myths to bust is that dandruff is NOT caused by poor hygiene. There are plenty of factors – such as existing skin conditions, products you’re using, stress, diet, or even the weather – which can worsen or cause dandruff.
