What Does Toner Do

Face toner is an essential part of your daily skincare regime, but do you actually know what it does and how it works? We’ve explored the what, where and how of this lesser-known but powerful skincare product, bringing you the ultimate guide to toner.

The low-down - what does toner do?
A face toner is a skincare product designed to further cleanse the skin and remove any remaining oils, impurities and traces of makeup. This can also include any residue left by your face wash.

A good quality toner leaves your skin feeling that little bit more refreshed. It smoothes and repairs the skin’s surface, unclogging and shrinking the appearance of pores and reducing any signs of redness or inflammation.

Toner is also great at restoring your skin’s pH balance. Skin is naturally slightly acidic (this is where the pH is below 7), but this balance can get disrupted by the cleansing process, particularly if you’re using a more alkaline face wash or soap (those with a pH above 7). Your skin has to work hard to restore its natural pH, which can result in excess oils, leaving skin more vulnerable to unwanted bacteria. Over time, this can lead to dryness and faster aging. Using a toner gets your skin’s pH balance back where it should be, as quickly as possible.

Your skin goes through a lot every day – from pollutants in the air to chlorine in our water – so it needs all the protection it can get. By helping to close your pores and tighten the gaps between skin cells, toners help to stop impurities and environmental contaminants penetrating the skin, giving it that extra protection.

And if that didn’t convince you, there’s more. Most good skin toners contain hydrating ingredients, which are essential after cleansing to get skin ready for moisturisation. Moisturiser will penetrate your skin far more easily if it’s properly hydrated.

Which toner should I use?
Make sure you pick a toner that’s right for your skin type.

If you’ve got dry or sensitive skin, we recommend the L'Oréal Paris Fine Flowers Cleansing Toner. It contains carefully combined extracts of rose and jasmine flowers, known for their soothing, moisturising and protecting properties. Together, they leave your skin feeling perfectly cleansed and invigorated.

For more mature skin, why not try L'Oréal Paris Age Perfect Refreshing Toner. Its revitalising formula is enriched with vitamin C to target the signs of fatigue, leaving skin looking (and feeling) smooth, refreshed and radiant.

How do I use toner?
Now you’re up to speed on the benefits of toner, let’s talk application.

Toner should be applied every morning and evening, after cleansing and before moisturising. Those with drier skin may choose to only apply it at night.

Start with a good cleanse using a delicate cleanser like our Fine Flowers Gel-Cream Wash. Similar to the Fine Flowers Cleansing Toner, the combination of rose and jasmine extracts helps to cleanse, soften and tighten the skin, without drying it out.

Now it’s time to tone. Apply a few drops of toner to a cotton pad or cotton wool – these are perfect as they don’t absorb too much of the liquid, transferring plenty of product to your face. Add enough toner so the pad feels damp but not wet to the touch. To apply, sweep over your face, neck and décolletage, avoiding the delicate eye area. Be careful not to pull at your skin.

You can even use toner to revitalise your skin for an easy and rapid cleanse when you’re on the go.

So now you know!
When you’re planning your daily skincare routine, don’t let toning be the forgotten step. A high-quality L'Oréal Paris toner can eliminate dirt, grease and grime, giving you that crystal clear complexion while keeping skin nourished, protected and balanced. And it’ll help your other skincare products work just that little bit harder.
