There are various causes of split ends, which could result from mechanical breakage and may happen when the ends of your hair become frayed and brittle. Everything from cold weather and central heating to heat tools, harsh shampoos, and hair products, styling wet hair and even just brushing can cause split ends, so it’s not surprising that they’re so common.

Now we know what causes split ends, how can we make them go away? Ultimately, the only way to get rid of split ends is to cut them off. Now and again, there will be a new trend, or a product will arrive on the market accompanied by claims that it can get rid of split ends, but you’ll probably have to simply cut them off.

One process that’s been tried over the last few years is velaterapia, or candle cutting. This involves twisting a section of hair and burning it with a candle – it’s thought by some people that burning off your split ends can create a seal stopping the ends from splitting again in future. However, others think that this could actually cause split ends and damage your hair. Either way, if it’s something you decide to try, it’s best to use a professional rather than try it yourself.

While there might not be any handy way to get rid of split ends, you can at least do your best to prevent them. If you want to know how to stop split ends, you’re in the right place!

In particular, it’s best to limit your hair’s exposure to heat. You can use Elnett Heat Protect Styling Spray to keep your hair safe – its triple-action formula protects from heat damage up to 230°C, helping to stop split ends forming or other heat damage.

If you’re still wondering how to prevent split ends, try sleeping on a satin pillowcase, not brushing hair while it’s wet, and using wide-tooth combs when detangling hair. Likewise, it’s worth deep conditioning your hair on a regular basis and using sulphate-free shampoos to nourish and add strength to the hair strands.
