The Science of Anti-Ageing: the Skin Atlas

QUESTIONS TO Frédéric FLAMENT
Global Head of Instrumental Evaluation for L’Oréal Group and author of Ageing Atlasses

What are skin atlases and what is their objective?

These tools make it possible to classify homogeneous patient populations.
"Skin Aging Atlas" is the latest contribution to these classifications. It is also the first true topographic atlas of facial aging for each skin ethnicities. For each ethnic group, a single booklet, it offers all the criteria for evaluating the skin aging of the face. Thanks to this atlasses, the classifications can also be used together to evaluate or predict the general aging of the face. This atlasse were presented in numerous dermatological congresses around the world , and they can be particularly useful, and perhaps essential, for professors and researchers interested in facial aging as a reference and a tool of knowledge, and dermatologists and plastic surgeons wishing to evaluate the results of local "anti-aging" treatments (e.g. botulinum toxin on crow's feet) . "Skin Aging Atlas" have undoubtedly become the gold standard of aging evaluation tools for the dermatologist.

How do you evaluate facial ageing atlasses?

The objective evaluation of facial aging is a difficult exercise which requires the experience of an expert dermatologist Some publications have appeared over the past few years that seek to classify facial aging : crow's feet, glabellar wrinkles, ear lobe aging, neck sagging, etc. Theses photographic tools show the advantages to offer a calibrated compilation of the most relevant clinical facial aging sign and the racking of their intensity through different ethnics. Complementary studies allowed to establish for each ethnic group a mathematic model of the evolution of each sign with age.

Clinical studies including thousands of volunteers of the same ethnic group allows to compare pictures taken in the same standard conditions (positioning, lightening, …) to characterize the potential amplitude of each clinical sign and its correlation to age.
