How To Make Your Highlights Last Longer

Having highlights is like being in a long-term relationship, it requires the three C’s: commitment, consistency and care. With the recommend touch-ups on highlights being every 8-10 weeks, maintenance costs can quickly add up, not to mention the more frequent you bleach your hair, the more proactive you have to be in preventing damage.

With that in mind, we’ve put together some of our top tips to making those highlights goes the distance and how to maintain them at home in between visits to the salon.

Pick the right shampoo

You wouldn’t wash silk with your normal detergent and the same goes for your highlighted hair. When choosing a shampoo, opt for one with a colour protecting formula like our L’Oréal Elvive Colour Protect Shampoo, enriched with Linseed oil and UVA + UVB filters, protecting the hairs colour radiance. Following shampoo, go in with the L’Oréal Elvive Colour Protect Conditioner for extra nourishment.

Indulge in illumination

If your highlights are starting to look a little lifeless then dousing them in an illuminating oil is a great way to instantly add vibrancy and shine. The L’Oréal Elvive Extraordinary Oil for Coloured Hair leaves your hair feeling nourished, protected and illuminated. Take two drops of the oil and rub in the palm of your hands to warm the product, apply evenly through the lengths of your hair for colour enhancement and weightless shine.

Spritz some heat protection

Just as you protect your skin from sun damage, it’s important that your hair gets the same treatment. Exposure to direct sunlight and using heated tools such as; straighteners, curlers and blow dryers, all contribute to colour fading. Apply a product loaded with heat protection ingredients like L'Oréal Elvive Dream Lengths Sleek Serum, its lightweight formula protects hair from heat up to 230°C.

Invest in a shower filter

Hard water can wreak havoc on hair and skin, the hard metals found in certain waters can strip hair of its natural minerals, leaving locks with a rough texture, dehydrated and prone to breakage. Investing in a water filter for your shower will work wonders on your highlights in the long run, we’re talking noticeably softer and hydration restored.

Keep the moisture in

Moisture to hair is like what avocado is to millennials - you cannot have enough of it, too much is never going to be a bad thing. When the hair is stripped of its natural minerals and oils, whether that’s from heat, over styling, pollution or UV exposure, damage becomes visible to the hair health. Hydration is the key to healthy highlighted hair - we don’t need to reel off the health benefits of drinking water but if you can manage 6-8 glasses a day, your hair will thank you for it later.
