Dark eye circles are different to bags or puffiness, and they have different causes.
Dark circles under eyes look shadowy compared to your usual skin tone. The delicate undereye area might appear black, brown, blue or purple. These shadowy areas appear when blood builds up underneath the eyes due to poor circulation, giving it that blue-coloured tinge. Bags, on the other hand, are caused by fluid or fat deposits and appear puffed up.
What Causes Dark Circles Under Eyes?
One of the main culprits is simply the natural ageing process. As we age, our skin becomes looser and thinner, which makes the blood vessels more prominent.
Dark eye circles can also be hereditary, running in families. So, if your parents are prone to dark circles, you may be too.
Physical causes of dark circles under eyes include rubbing and scratching, which can damage blood vessels. Skin issues like dermatitis cause blood vessel dilation, while hyperpigmentation from sun exposure can also impact skin tone and colour.
There are also plenty of lifestyle factors that come into play. It’s no coincidence that many of us think dark circles can make you look tired; in fact, they are often a real sign of fatigue and lack of sleep. Stress, alcohol, smoking, and dehydration also take their toll in the form of prominent blood vessels and dark areas of discolouration.
How to Prevent Dark Circles

Refresh your sleep schedule: Get at least seven hours of snooze a night to keep skin healthy and happy.
Reduce stress: Make time for yourself and find ways to unwind after a stressful day.
Watch your alcohol and tobacco intake: Cut back on drinking and quit smoking to improve hydration and circulation.
Always use suncream: Find a good SPF and stick to it daily, especially around eyes where your skin is fine and thin.
