How To Dye Your Hair A Natural Looking Colour At Home

Dyeing your hair at home is a cost-effective way of keeping your locks looking vibrant through every season. For many of us, our hair is a way to show our identity, so it stands to reason that when we dye it ourselves we want to get it right first time round.
How do I choose the right colour or shade for me?

The hair colour or shade that will make your features pop depends on your skin tone and natural colouring. You may already have an idea of whether you want to go lighter or darker, but with so many shades to choose from, it helps to know which ones are going to best complement your natural beauty.
Once you’ve chosen your colour, check the guide on the back of the pack to get a good idea of how the colour will turn out once applied to your hair. You may need to pre-lighten your hair first to achieve your desired look. Remember: If you hesitate between two shades, always choose the lighter one.

What do I need to do before I dye my hair?

Before you start dyeing your hair at home, make sure you’re prepared. As well as your chosen Casting Crème Gloss Semi-Permanent Hair colour, you’ll need a few more essentials:

● An old towel which you can drape over your shoulders to protect your clothing
● Petroleum jelly to apply to your hairline and ears to stop the dye staining your skin
● A plastic brush or applicator to help ensure an even application
● Get yourself in the mood for some pampering with a playlist of your favourite hits (OK this one’s optional, but highly recommended)

All our hair dye kits contain plastic gloves, dye, developer and conditioning aftercare. Also, make sure you always refer to the the instructions on the pack and in the leaflet provided.

Always do an allergy alert test at least 48 hours before you dye your hair in case you have any allergies to the hair dye. To do this, take a small amount of dye and apply it to a patch behind your ear. Don’t wash your hair for at least 24 hours after the test application. Always refer to the instructions on the pack and in the leaflet when carrying out an allergy alert test.

I’m all set, how do I dye my hair?

Now you’re just a few simple steps away from hair colour excellence. Excited?

In order to achieve an even application, brush your hair thoroughly, divide it into four or five sections and secure with plastic clips. Take each section individually and, using an applicator or your gloved fingers, cover it evenly with dye from root to tip, brushing the dye downwards, covering every part of your hair. Pay close attention to the area behind your ears, which is easy to miss.

Once your whole head is covered, set a timer for the specified time on the box and in the leaflet, kick back, and relax. When the time is up, rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water, and use the conditioner contained within your Casting Crème Gloss Semi-Permanent Hair Dye kit. This will add a gorgeous shine.

Dyeing your hair for the first time

If you’re dyeing your hair for the first time, the process to follow is exactly the same as above.

You may also want to ask a friend to help you colour the back of your hair the first time around, so you don’t accidentally miss any hard-to-reach spots. As with any beauty regime, the more you do it, the easier it gets!

Dyeing previously coloured hair

If you’ve found your ideal colour and simply want to top it up, you only need to colour the roots. Overlapping colour too much can leave you with darker, uneven patches, and you’ll also use more hair dye than is necessary.

If you’re recolouring your hair to a totally a different shade, use the guide on the back of the pack to see how it will look when applied over your existing colour then follow the steps as if you were colouring for the first time.
