Patch Testing

First things first, when it comes to colouring, it’s really important to do a skin allergy test at least 48 hours beforehand. Apply a small amount of the pink dye behind your ear. Wait 48 hours to see how your skin reacts. If during this period you notice any abnormal reactions, such as itching, redness or swelling in or around the test area, then do not apply the product.

Prep your skin and locks

Next up, are you currently light or dark haired? If you’re naturally blonde, you’re in luck – there’s not a lot of prep work for you, aside from ensuring your hair is in good and healthy condition. Treat yourself to a conditioning mask a week or so ahead of dyeing to strengthen the hair. If your hair is darker, bleaching before using the colour is recommended in order to achieve the optimum results.

Before applying the bleach, take a small amount of petroleum jelly and apply it lightly around the hairline, ears, and nape of your neck, this will prevent the skin from getting stained.

Sectioning your hair

Take a comb and start by parting hair down the middle from front to back and from the top of each ear from left to right. Secure with four plastic hair clips. Sectioning the hair into quarters allows you to concentrate on the areas you need to while keeping the hair you’re not working on out of the way.

Bleaching

Before applying the bleach, make sure you cover yourself with an old towel and always wear the plastic gloves provided to keep your skin safe.

Begin to apply the bleach to each section of the hair as quickly and thoroughly as possible in order to achieve best results. Once each section has been covered, massage the product into the hair to ensure the application is even.

Check every few minutes to make sure the bleach is developing – do so by wiping a small amount of the product off a strand of hair with a piece of damp cotton wool. If you are happy with the result, rinse the product off and shampoo thoroughly before using the conditioner included in the kit.
