The benefits of using cleansing milk and cleansing cream

Dealing with dry or sensitive skin? Listen up. Cleansing milk or cleansing cream could be the perfect cleansing lotion for you, helping to get rid of all the gunk and grime that builds up over the day. Want to know more about these types of facial cream cleansers? Get the inside track with our full-fat guide.
What is cleansing milk?

Cleansing milk is a light, gentle cleanser that takes a more delicate approach to cleansing your skin. It’s produced from the natural emulsion of fats and water – no, it’s not made from real milk! – and helps to cleanse your skin without stripping away your natural oils. Cleansing milk can be made from natural fats or animal-based fats and is a highly effective way to remove grime, dirt, and makeup from your face. So, why “milk”? Simple. That’s because of the product’s milky appearance and consistency.

What’s the difference between cleansing milk and cleansing cream?

The terms “cleansing milk” and “cleansing cream” are often used interchangeably, but there are a few differences that it’s essential to understand. Most obviously, cleansing milk has a thin, milky texture, whereas cleansing cream is much thicker. Also, cleansing milk is made from emollients and oils, while cleansing cream tends to feature heavier waxes and occlusive oils. They offer many of the same benefits, but cleansing creams tend to be better suited to people with more sensitive skin.

What are the benefits of cleansing milk?

As we mentioned earlier, cleansing milk offers a gentler way to cleanse your face, leaving it feeling soft and refreshed. Many cleansing lotions – especially ones designed to fight acne – are too harsh and can lead to your skin drying out, as they contain strong chemicals or soaps. Cleansing cream/milk lets the ingredients speak for themselves. There aren’t any additives or foaming ingredients, and the soft, cloudy texture is ideal for people with dry and sensitive skin.
Bottom line: cleansing milk is a calming way to remove impurities that have built up throughout the day or overnight, while also kickstarting the hydration and moisturisation process.

Who shouldn’t use cleansing cream?

Although cleansing milk/cream can be beneficial for all skin types, if used correctly, certain people may see better results with more targeted treatment. For example, cleansers that are formulated to balance sebum may be better suited for people with oily skin. Furthermore, people who are prone to acne are likely to experience more significant benefits from facial cream cleansers that specifically target breakouts. Typically, these types of skincare products feature lavender, charcoal, and tea-tree oil.

How do you apply cleansing milk?

Cleansing milk should be the first step in your cleansing routine. There’s no need to apply cleansing lotion to wet skin, as this will only dilute the product and make it less effective. Instead, massage facial cream cleanser over your skin when it’s dry, working in circular motions around your face and neck with the tips of your fingers, which helps to emulsify the product. Do this for around 30 seconds before rinsing it off with warm water.
