How To Style Hair for a Rock Concert

Dream of being a punk rock princess? Even if you’re not performing on the stage anytime soon, you can still get the look. You can make a statement with your outfit, and the other piece of the puzzle is the hair – it’s where you really bring the rock look to life. Depending on the act, hairstyles can range from basic to a little OTT. Without a little know-how, it’s often easier to fantasise about your dream look than it is to create it. But the one thing we know for sure is that hair can impress. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up three of our favourite hairstyles with fierce rock vibes.

The Glam Rock Goddess

Nothing screams glam rock like sky high volume. This look will elicit a devil-may-care attitude in equal measure to super-sleek style – all in four simple steps.

Step 1 – Section your hair

Using a rattail comb or your finger, section out the top portion of your hair from each temple to the crown of the head. Secure the lower section of your hair out of the way as you work on the top.

Step 2 – Begin the backcomb
To create the volume that this look craves, backcomb your strands in 1cm sections from the front of the hairline. To do this, simply hold the section at the top and drag your comb down towards the root in a repetitive motion, until it all looks a bit tangled. (Don’t worry, this will start looking sleek very soon!) Spray with L’Oréal Paris Stylista The Big Hair Spray to hold.

Step 3 – Create the volume

With the full top-of-head section backcombed, brush from front to back lightly with your comb to smooth and shape your style, then roll the ends of the section underneath to create a barrel roll that will hold up the voluminous look. Pin with hair grips to secure.

Step 4 – Polish and go
To finish up the glam rock half-up do, pull the sections from the left and right sides tightly towards the back of the head. Smooth with a brush as needed. Fold one section over the other, just beneath the barrel roll and secure in place with grips.
From here, you can either head out the door with a softer style, or you can spray with L’Oréal Paris Stylista The Big Hair Spray and backcomb the hanging parts of the sections you just added, tucking and pinning them up to cover the point where your barrel curl and cross sections meet. Tease the lower sections as well for full volume the whole way through.

The Classic Rock Pony

Let’s start off sweet and simple. The Classic Rock Pony is a three-step wonder. It leaves you with a just-woke-up-like this look that’s perfectly tailored to rolling up in a leather jacket and jeans, offering a casual, undone vibe.

Step 1 – Section the hair
Begin by brushing your hair roughly into a ponytail shape, pulling it all to just above the nape of the neck. With a rough placement ready, section off the top of the loose ponytail shape you just created and let it fall half to the left and half to the right. With the rest of your hair gripped and shaped, use a hair band to secure it in place.

Step 2 – Create the crossover
The part of this style that elevates it from uber-laidback to intentional chic is the crossover detailing. Remember those two sections you left out of the ponytail you just secured? These are the stars of the show. Holding the section on the left side of your hair, give it one or two loose twists and then wrap it around the right side of your hair band, pinning it underneath. Repeat. Give the section on the right side of your hair one or two twists and pin underneath your pony to secure.

Step 3 – Add the finishing touches
You should now have a casual, cool low ponytail in place (with the hair band hidden!) that’s fully gig-ready. The final step is to add a bit of texture and ‘oomph’. To do this, employ a sea salt spray like L’Oréal Paris Stylista The Beach Wave Mist. Hold the spray nozzle far enough away from your hair to provide a light mist, and begin to spray your ponytail in sections to add a bit of undone cool. When you’re satisfied with volume and texture, head out to your gig.

The Punk Rock Parting

Achieving a rockin’ gig style is sometimes as simple as a new parting. Another three-step super style, The Punk Rock Parting will have you prepped for a night out in no time.

Step 1 – Blow it out
A key step to creating this look is in the pre-style preparation. Begin with clean, damp hair and L’Oréal Paris Stylista The Blowdry Cream. Run the product through damp strands and then blowdry your hair using a round brush, working to add volume along the way. A product like this Blowdry Cream offers up to 72 hours of extended style protection, so it’s the perfect tool for achieving the look you want – with plenty of staying power.

Step 2 – Create the parting
With smoothly styled, dry hair, use a tail comb to create a deep side parting. The side you choose to create it on is up to you, but the idea is to keep it well defined from the front of your hairline to just before the crown of your head.

Step 3 – Complete the style
Now your parting’s in place, all it takes now is a few grips and a bit of hairspray to complete the style. Working on the side of the parting with less hair, use your comb to tightly brush hair from the hairline towards the back of your head.

Keeping your hair flush against your head, secure with crisscrossing hair grip just behind your ear. From here, simply add hairspray and comb up (or smooth down) the rest of your hair until you reach the amount of volume you desire.
