Dos & Don

Dos & Don'ts of Stick Foundation

Looking for a multi-purpose foundation that can cover, contour, and conceal all in one? We’ve got the answer. With our new super-blendable Infallible Longwear Shaping Sticks, you’ll be able to create a range of striking looks that last up to 24 hours.

If you’ve spent years using a liquid foundation, a foundation stick can take some getting used to. But not only are they handbag-friendly (there’s no chance of leakage), stick foundations are so versatile. They can be used to highlight, contour, conceal and bake, providing a flawless, buildable base for your makeup.

Wondering how to apply stick foundation? We’ve compiled our essential step-by-step guide of dos and don’ts to bring you the ultimate stick foundation tutorial.

Do… choose the right shade
The most important step when it comes to choosing any foundation is to find the right shade for your skin tone. To give you some idea, think about your skin’s undertone. Take a look in the mirror and see whether your skin looks more rosy (pink-toned) or golden (yellow-toned). If your face looks more rosy, you have a ‘cool’ undertone, whereas if it seems more golden, you have a ‘warm’ undertone.

When it comes to choosing which warm or cool shade is right for you, the only way to test is to apply it to your face (sorry ladies, the old back-of-the-hand swatch simply won’t cut it!). The right foundation shade won’t give you colour, it will blend in with your existing tone – so choose three that you think look about right and swipe them along your jawline. The one that’s hardly visible is the right shade for you.

Our Infallible Longwear Shaping Sticks come in 12 super-blendable shades, from Ivory through to Espresso.

Do… make sure your skin is clean
Before applying your foundation stick, you’ll want to ensure that your skin is clean. That doesn’t mean you have to wash your face right before you apply make-up; instead, get into the habit of washing your face first thing in the morning to freshen up and remove excess oils. This will help you create a great base for makeup application.

Our Smooth Sugar Clear Scrub is specifically designed to smooth skin, unclog pores, visibly reduce blackheads and blemishes, and purify skin. Suitable for all skin types, this 100% naturally-derived exfoliant is gentle enough for everyday use. It’ll give you a fantastic base to build upon.

Do… prep your face
Now your face is clean and clear, it’s time to apply your toner. Our Fine Flowers Cleansing Toner combines extracts of rose and jasmine flowers to invigorate your skin and eliminate any last traces of impurities. It’ll leave you with a perfectly cleansed complexion that feels soft and smooth.

After toning, apply a moisturiser to hydrate your skin and ensure an even, flawless application of your stick foundation. Our Hydra Genius Aloe Water is immediately absorbed, instantly refreshing, rehydrating, and reinvigorating the skin, locking in moisture for up to 72 hours.

Do… use a primer
Firstly, a primer can protect your skin against clogged pores and provide a perfectly smooth surface on which to apply your stick foundation. Secondly, primers can correct any specific skin issues you might have that could make your stick foundation application appear less-than-flawless.

Our Infallible Primer Shots make it easy to find the perfect primer for you, and give you the best results when it comes to applying your foundation:

Mattifying Primer absorbs excess oil for an instantly matte complexion
Anti-Redness Primer neutralises red tones and blemishes with green pigments
Anti-Fatigue Primer fights dullness and fatigue with apricot pigments
Pore-Refining Primer masks skin imperfections for an even-looking finish
Luminising Primer creates a super-luminous, glowing look with ultra-fine pearl pigments

Don’t… twist the stick too high
When it comes to applying stick foundation, you need to think like a concealer or a lipstick. To prevent breakages, don’t twist the tube too high.

Don’t… apply all over your face
When you apply stick foundation, you don’t want to apply it all over your face like you’re painting a canvas.

Take a phased approach starting from the centre of your face. Apply a line down your nose, lines across your cheeks, and dots around your hairline. Now, using either a brush, sponge, or clean fingertips, start to blend your foundation from the centre of your face moving outwards.

Do… use for contouring
Not only do our Infallible Longwear Shaping Sticks come in 12 super-blendable, super-buildable shades, the bullet-shaped applicator means that you can get the high level of precision you need for the perfect contour.

Draw lines in a darker shade than your skin tone along the top of your forehead, under your cheekbones and over your jaw line to give the appearance of slimmed down features and add definition. This leads us onto the next point...

Do… use for highlighting
After applying your contour lines, use an Infallible Longwear Shaping Stick that’s a couple of shades lighter than your skin tone to highlight your features. Apply this shade to your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, and underneath your eyes to accentuate features and brighten your complexion. And finally…

Don’t… neglect blending
Once you’ve done your contouring and highlighting, you'll want to ensure you blend your makeup perfectly. Blend your stick foundation in circular buffing motions using a foundation brush, or ‘bounce’ a makeup sponge over your skin (be careful that your sponge doesn’t soak up the product). If you’re on-the-go, you could use your fingers to blend your foundation. Just make sure your hands are clean so that you don’t cause breakouts by spreading bacteria over your face.

No matter what method you’re using to blend, Infallible Longwear Shaping Sticks have an ultra-creamy formula that seamlessly melts into skin for oh-so-buildable coverage that won’t create that dreaded ‘mask’ effect.

Do… apply setting powder
And finally, we couldn’t complete this stick foundation tutorial without ensuring that your hard work doesn’t go to waste!

After you’ve blended for that perfectly flawless finish, apply our True Match Setting Powder to set your makeup without adding any weight or texture. This lightweight formula instantly mattifies skin, providing all-day-long shine control. Simply swirl a brush to pick up the power, tap off the excess, and apply all over your face, paying special attention to oily areas such as your t-zone and forehead.
