Beauty Secrets of Honey

What is manuka honey, and what are the beauty benefits?

Honey is the ultimate powerhouse ingredient. Sweet in both taste and nature, this golden nectar has been doing the rounds for some time. The benefits of honey are vast and varied, making it a key ingredient in health and beauty elixirs dating as far back as ancient Ayurveda.

Manuka honey is widely celebrated as being one of the most powerful honeys of all. It’s used to help skin heal, cleanse pores and hydrate down to the skin’s deepest layer. But what exactly is manuka honey? And how can you incorporate it into your beauty routine? Read on to discover the buzz around nature’s golden child.

What is manuka honey?

Not all honey is created equal. While most raw honey is good for your body, pure grade manuka honey is widely considered to be one the best for both health and beauty. It’s produced in New Zealand by bees that pollinate the Manuka bush, and is set apart from traditional honey by its range of antibacterial properties.

The key ingredients that make manuka honey so powerful are:

  • Methylglyoxal (MG) - While this ingredient is found in all types of honey, the concentration of methylglyoxal in manuka honey is much higher. This is due to the addition of another compound, dihydroxyacetone, which is found in high concentrations in the nectar of manuka flowers. It’s the combination of these ingredients that are responsible for manuka honeys antibacterial effects.

  • Hydrogen Peroxide – This is found in all types of honey and gives it its antibiotic qualities.

  • Vitamins & Minerals – All honey contains vitamins and minerals but manuka honey is said to contain four times the mineral content of other types of honey. Minerals found in honey include iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, potassium and selenium.

  • What are the beauty benefits of manuka honey?

Manuka honey is one of nature’s secrets to beauty success. It has a whole range of benefits for your hair, skin and body - there’s no wonder it’s used in beauty products the world over. Here are a few of our favourite manuka honey benefits:

    1. Manuka honey helps to clear your skin
Manuka honey is your problem skin’s new best friend. It has a range of natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can work wonders on your blemishes. It helps to soothe inflamed skin, while healing blemishes at the same time - double power!

    2. Manuka honey is a natural exfoliant
Because it contains valuable amino acids, manuka honey helps to gently remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, making it the ideal ingredient in exfoliators. It also helps to balance the skin’s natural pH levels, which in turn reduces inflammation and breakouts.

    3. Manuka honey helps your skin retain moisture
The sugars in honey act as a natural humectant, which means they help draw moisture into your skin and reduce dryness. This extra moisture helps to enhance your skin’s elasticity, which in turn works to reduce the visible signs of ageing. Look out for anti-ageing products that contain manuka honey for some extra rejuvenation.

    4. It helps heal wounds
The MG contained in manuka honey is a power antibacterial which helps to heal wounds. On contact with water, the hydrogen peroxide contained in the honey reacts by releasing oxygen and disinfecting the wound. It then works to draw out any nasty bacteria that may be hanging around inside the wound, helping to kill microbes and speed up the healing process. It can even be used to reduce the appearance of scars.

    5. Manuka honey can be used on your hair
The moisturising and water retaining qualities of honey make it great at helping to prevent dry and brittle hair. Use it in a hair mask - your strands will feel soft, nourished and full of life.

    6. And your lips
Perfect for the winter months, honey will help to repair dry, chapped lips and restore your pout to its full, kissable glory.

    7. It even aids your beauty sleep
It seems there’s no end to manuka honeys superpowers, and it’s even considered to help aid a better night’s sleep. Take a teaspoon of this gift from the bees just before bed, it helps improve the production of melatonin in the brain that regulates the circadian rhythm and helps regulate our sleep cycles.
