How to protect skin, prevent wrinkles, and reduce the onset of ageing
While we’re firm believers in growing old gorgeously and loving your laughter lines, it’s also incredibly important to take care of your skin – especially as you get older. While wrinkles are an inevitable part of ageing (sorry, ladies, we can’t help that completely), following a skincare regime that gives your skin regular TLC can protect your skin from damage, prevent the deepening of wrinkles, and overall reduce the early onset of ageing.
What causes wrinkles?
As we’ve already mentioned, wrinkles are an inevitable part of getting older (unless you have a celebrity budget to spend on the illusion of age defiance). The good news is that by understanding a bit more about what causes wrinkles in the first place, you can take action to delay and reduce them. Of course, some causes of wrinkles you can control, and some you can’t.
Causes of wrinkles you can’t control
● Ageing: Your skin will naturally lose its elasticity as you get older, which is due to a decrease in the production of natural oils. This reduction in natural oils dries out your skin, making it appear more wrinkled than when you were younger.
● Loss of fat: Fat is stored in the deeper layers of your skin, and as you age this gradually diminishes, leading to more pronounced lines and wrinkles.
● Repeated facial expressions: Unless you’re a robot or opt for some seriously extreme botox, there isn’t much you can do about this one. Repetition of the same facial expressions, such as furrowing your brow or smiling does lead to wrinkles – that’s why we call them laughter lines! Every time you use a muscle in your face, it creates a “groove” underneath the surface of your skin. As your skin naturally loses flexibility with age it can’t simply spring back into place, and these grooves form wrinkles.
Causes of wrinkles you CAN control
● Sun exposure: Exposure to UV light in the sun’s rays is the biggest cause of early ageing, and prolonged exposure to the sun can significantly speed up the ageing process. This is because UV radiation breaks down collagen and elastin in your skin, reducing elasticity and causing skin to wrinkle prematurely.
● Smoking: Smoking is one of the fastest ways to accelerate the normal aging process of your skin, contributing to wrinkles. The nicotine in cigarettes causes blood vessels in the outer layers of your skin to narrow, impairing blood flow. Reduced blood flow means your skin simply doesn't get as many essential nutrients like Vitamin A, or as much oxygen. So if you needed that extra kick to quit the habit, here it is!
How to get rid of wrinkles
Billions of dollars are spent globally on treatments to get rid of wrinkles – from botox to facelifts, and dermabrasion to chemical peels. If you want to avoid these more extreme (and sometimes risky) options, you’re certainly not alone.
Thankfully, these days there are plenty of great anti-ageing products available on the high street which can get rid of wrinkles, or at least significantly reduce their appearance. While most women start to use anti-ageing creams from their late twenties, it’s never too late to start giving your skin the love it needs.

How to prevent wrinkles
As well as helping to reduce and get rid of wrinkles, anti-ageing creams can also work to prevent the early appearance of wrinkles. In addition to using a range of anti-ageing products, some other ways to help prevent wrinkles are:
● Exercise regularly: Regular exercise helps your body to maintain good circulation and blood flow, ensuring your skin gets more oxygen and nutrients. Some studies have also suggested that exercise helps prevent ageing at a cellular level.
● Get your Omega-3: Having enough omega-3 fatty acids in your diet keeps your skin cell membranes healthy, and helps your skin cells to hold onto moisture. Sources of omega-3 include oily fish like salmon and mackerel, as well as certain plants and nut oils.
● Cut down on alcohol: We’re sorry to say it party girls, but alcohol dehydrates you and adds toxins to your system – both of which can lead to visible signs of ageing. To keep skin looking youthful, cut down and moderate your alcohol consumption, perhaps even switching out your glass of white wine for red which contains antioxidants.
● Eat antioxidants: Dark fruits such as blueberries, blackberries, plums, and cherries are packed with antioxidants that fight skin-damage and help keep you looking younger.
● Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water every day to help keep you (and your skin) hydrated. Most health professionals agree that we should aim to drink around 8 glasses of water a day.
● Avoid the sun: Lots of UV exposure can lead to visible signs of ageing early. To reduce exposure to the sun, choose make-up and/or a moisturiser with an SPF, and always wear sun cream if you’re out in the sun for any period of time. Even better, stay in the shade as much as possible, or invest in a (stylish, of course) wide brimmed hat that covers your face.
