Why do you get dry skin in winter, and what can you do to help?

Logs roaring over open fires, hot chocolate and the promise of snow are all things we love about winter, but achieving the right winter skin care routine can be a struggle. Recognising the signs of dry skin in winter, and learning how to minimise them, is key to achieving a fresh, healthy glow all year round.

Let’s start with the basics. As temperatures drop, so too does the humidity, forcing water in our skin to evaporate faster. Once you take away the moisture in the air, your skin loses a key source of hydration, and can lose up to a quarter of its moisture.

Don’t panic, winter doesn’t have to mean months of dry, itchy skin. We’ve put together our top tips to achieve summer fresh skin during the coldest months of the year. Read on to discover more.

1. Use a gentle cleanser

Clearing your pores is essential for a healthy glow, no matter what the season. In the colder months, opt for a cleanser that provides as much hydration as possible.

When cleansing in winter, it’s best to avoid face wipes. Although it’s tempting to rub off your makeup with a simple wipe, this can actually end up stripping your skin of moisture. Like anything, when skin dries it can become raw, flaky and cracked. Harsh scrubs are most certainly out.

Instead, use a gentle cleanser, such as our Age Perfect Micellar Water. This can be applied at the beginning and end of the day, and works to clear your skin of any excess makeup and oil after a good night’s sleep, while also removing any pollutants picked up during the day. Micellar water is a great ingredient to include in your winter skin care routine as it reduces the toxic effects of pollutants without being harsh on your skin. It also vastly reduces the irritants found in some detergents, which can become more of a problem in winter when your skin is more sensitive. Our Age Perfect Micellar Water packs an extra punch as it contains Pro-Vitamin B5. This will help restore your natural glow and nourish your skin, all while injecting some all-important hydration.

2. Treat with a serum

Give your skin some extra love with our Age Perfect Intensive Re-Nourish face serum, which contains manuka honey, famous for its repairing and medicinal properties. Manuka honey combines with Calcium B5 to give this powerful serum its superpowers. Use on your face and neck throughout winter and benefit from a deep, nourishing skin hydration.

When skin is dry it loses a layer of protection, which means it can get more easily irritated by harsh ingredients. The soothing qualities of raw manuka honey help to rehydrate your skin while helping to repair any damage, while restoring the skin’s density and barrier function.

To apply, squeeze two drops onto your fingers and massage into your face. Take care not to rub too vigorously, and be gentle as you apply.

3. Focus on problem areas

Overall nourishment restored, it’s time to focus on any problem areas.

Our Age Perfect Intensive Re-Nourish salve immediately soothes dry spots - whether that be on your face, neck or hands - to provide rapid relief during the driest months of the year. The salve contains both manuka and acacia honey, which help to reduce inflammation and repair broken skin.

Our salve performs two tasks. In the short term it will renourish and rehydrate any problem areas. In the long term, when these areas are better able to repair themselves, the salve restores an effective barrier against pollutants, dehydration and damage.

As with our serum, this salve is powerful, so a little goes a long way. Use a coin-sized drop daily for the biggest impact.

4. Use thicker moisturising creams

Winter months are when thick moisturising creams come into their own. Break out of your summer habits - thin creams just aren’t going to hack it. For dry, itchy skin we need all the hydration and restoration we can get our hands on.

Our Extraordinary Oil Cream is a great way to protect your skin against the harsh elements. It combines cream and oil to nourish and revitalise sensitive winter skin. Infused with essential oils lavender and rosemary, this is the ideal moisturiser to give your skin extra indulgence, helping to reduce the signs of ageing and fatigue.

In the evening, try our Age Perfect Intensive Re-Nourish night cream. Packed with natural ingredients including manuka honey and Calcium B5, this night cream is specifically designed to rehydrate dry skin overnight, repairing cracks and fortifying for the day ahead. As we know, manuka honey is renowned for its anti-inflammatory quality, reducing visible signs of soreness.

5. Watch the heat

We all look forward to a long hot shower when its cold out, but be careful. Turning up the heat on your daily shower can cause real damage to your skin and hair. Water that’s too hot dries out the skin and makes it difficult for emollients, creams and oils to work their magic. Instead, knock the temperature down and take a lukewarm shower. Yes, it’s not the sauna we dream of, but it will protect your surface layers and ward off dry, itchy skin.

We spend summer removing excess oil, often forgetting that when winter arrives we need all the hydration we can find. Change up your routine in time for the colder months, and you’ll soon enjoy a rosy, winter’s glow.
