Our consumers’ health and safety have always been a top priority for L’Oréal Group. The defense of the animal cause is just as important to us.
Developed more than 30 years ago, Episkin, L’Oréal’s pioneering proprietary reconstructed skin technology, provides a reliable and viable alternative to animal testing. By reproducing the structure of human skin and replicating the conditions for product application, in just a few hours the technology can predict the safety of an ingredient or formula, enabling performance comparisons well before it has even been clinically tested.
Well before animal testing became a regulatory or societal concern, L'Oréal had developed, in 1979, alternative methods based on a technology that was unique at the time – the reconstruction of human skin.
By 1989, L’Oréal had definitively stopped testing products on animals, 14 years before this was required by law for products. Beyond skin models, L'Oréal also uses a great number of predictive evaluation tools that avoid animal use, such as molecular modelling, expert toxicology systems and imaging techniques.
Episkin is currently the only reconstituted skin technology that is approved by the European Commission.
Priority to natural ingredients
Each year, L’Oréal’s predictive evaluation centre in France produces around 150,000 units of reconstructed tissue.
By 2025, 100% of our plastic packaging will be recyclable, reusable and compostable
3 Episkin centers around the world:
Our ambition is to have 100% of our factories entirely powered by renewable energy by 2025, and 100% of them equipped with waterloop systems by 2030.
Up to 97% of biodegrability for our new generation of masks and conditioners
11 carbon neutral factories and 10 carbon neutral distribution centers by 2030
Manufacturing on a large scale requires a complete rethink of processes to preserve a cleaner, greener planet. Between 2005 and 2020, our factories and distribution centres have already reduced CO2 emissions by 82%, water consumption by 44%, and waste generation by 35%. More than ever, we keep promoting carbon reduction initiatives throughout our manufacturing processes. Today, the Elvive range is produced in a carbon-neutral factory that uses 100% renewable energy. The plant is powered by recycling local forest residues.

Empowering women around the world
As women are the primary victims of climate change, L'Oréal Paris will invest €10 million in a series of 6 carbon projects whose beneficiaries are communities of women around the world. Along with financial support, L’Oréal Paris will also develop specific programs that encourage a greater inclusion of women in leadership of these projects. In Honduras for example, where local indigenous communities protect and restore mangroves, the brand will support a project managed by a cooperative of women. They will receive support through courses on leadership, financial independence, and women’s health.
