The new formulation is awful! It’s thinner than the original version and drips everywhere during application. I bought 513, which looks medium/dark brown on the box, but which has turned my hair a horrible harsh black. I used to really like this product but won’t be buying any more!

I was using a musses couple of times before, but because I couldn't find any now, I have bought a L'Oréal Casting Creme Gloss Hair Colourant Chestnut Honey 634. And... I was VERY DISAPPOINTED by the result. Instead of Chestnut Honey (634) my hair, from light brown turned into very dark brown, almost black - that has nothing to do with Chestnut Honey!!!!!!!!!!!!! NEVER AGAIN!!!!!

I have been using this for about 12-18 months. My hair used to go a lovely rich reddy brown, now the colour looks faded as soon as it's applied and is more of a rusty blonde. This used to be so convenient for a quick dye/ refresh but I'm considering going back to the hairdressers and sucking up the cost

So disappointed with new formula. Have used this colour for a few years now and loved it, now it is much lighter and doesn't cover greys, in fact, hardly any colour at all. I now have to search for a new product. Not happy !!!

I had been happily using Casting for 20 years+ on my naturally warm mid brown hair and usually the reds were my favoured shades. A year or so ago I decided to become more copper - so I used 'Amber' every 4 weeks for around 9 months, which was always initially too purply straight after colouring but it faded through the perfect shade before becoming slightly brassy (especially in the sun). I switched to 'Amber Honey' recently which was lovely initially but after 3 washes my roots were noticeably a dusty orange. I repeated it after 2 weeks and the same thing happened again. I've since tried 'Chestnut Honey'.....day1 = very happy and my hairdresser complimented me on it, but one week (3 washes) on its become a definite ginger shade which in bright sunlight looks hideous (because it looks dyed orange- especially at the sides where I have more grey and the colour takes in a far more obvious way!) I feel my next shade might have to be a boring mid brown to neutralise the orange tones before I contemplate my next move.

I have used this product for years with very satisfactory results. The newly formulated product is awful. It has left my hair visibly lighter than previous and is staining bedding and clothing an odd yellow colour. I suspect natural dyes may be doing this. I will not use this again and will be writing to L'Oreal with my concerns. Proceed with caution!

Been using this hair dye for years and have always been really happy. Got confused looking for medium brown now though as it is now called 500 Light Brown. Be careful as it is not , it is medium brown. Their new conditioner does not work for my hair. It left it frizzy and hard to style. The previous honey conditioner was so much better. I wish they had left the previous hair dye alone .

The first photo where my hair is ginger, is the BEFORE photo. I bought this hair dye to ‘top up’ what I had - my hair was essentially the colour on the box to start with. I was hoping to do my roots and the second photo is the AFTER! As you can see it turned my hair very dark brown with no chestnut tones. So upset.

Easy to use, good colour but not for greys

Colour- I used 'Iced Truffle 513'. It does come out darker than the box colour, but I wanted my hair dark again so I am happy with it. I would say go a shade lighter if you really don't want a dark colour. It does fade slightly with every wash, but after 2 and half months the colour was still looking nice and not too brassy as I used to cover old balayage. Use - Easy to use, gloves are a bit tight and one pair ripped. I needed to use two boxes for full coverage, but my hair is fairly long and quite thick. Grey coverage- not great, if you are looking to cover a substantial amount of grey hair I would avoid this product. My greys are slightly less obvious but still visible. Overall I am happy with how the colour turned out and I have used it twice now. It is very easy to work with and left my hair feeling and looking good.

Good but problems

Good but a problem I bought this 4 days ago in the hope of adding a slight red colour to my hair -I’m a natural dark blonde and bought shade 634 .I applied in sections all over my hair and took time to cover everything .on lengths and midsection sits perfect and looks amazing -however my roots are bright orange! I’m stuck with hot roots that I’m completely stuck on how to fix .I’m hoping L’Oréal would give me tips on what to do as I’m worried I’ll have to try dye over them but what if it happens again?

Easy and does the job

This has saved me from looking ancient during lockdown with no hairdressers. It's easy to use, pretty good coverage, and leaves your hair feeling really soft and looking really shiny. I am allergic to lots of things and most hair dye stains my pale skin terribly (always shocks the hairdressers). I am neither allergic to this, nor do I get terrible stained skin. I've seen the bad reviews....not sure why you would complain that a brown hair dye has turned your hair brown. It kind of says it on the box. If you have dark brown hair and want to keep the grey at bay, I think this is a pretty good choice.

Unfortunately the colour of my hair with the new formula is totally different, more a dull unnatural looking shade of brown. Felt it left me with a badly home dyed hair look. I don't want to try a different shade as I think it's the new formula that's at fault. So now having to pay the hairdresser.

Have been using Casting for years and always happy with the result but the change of formula over past few months is causing my scalp to feel really irritated once I put the dye in my hair it starts getting itchy within a couple of minutes. Previously I used the 96 lightest golden brown from Clariol which has been discontinued. My hair is naturally a light brown with auburn tints. To my surprise the colour has come out a pleasant golden auburn colour and not a bright ginger, very similar to the Clariol product. I'm happy!

I bought 513, which looks medium/dark brown on the box, but which has turned my hair a horrible harsh black. I used to really like this product but won’t be buying any more!

I dyed my hair today in preparation for going on holiday in 2 days and the colours is completely different. It is a really dark, almost black colour and I look awful. I have washed it 3 times today to try and tone it down but it's not changing. It always used to look natural but just looks like a bad dye job. I'm so upset that it will look so awful on holiday.

It's not washing out, it just gets more orange with each wash. Bring back the old formula please. It was a great product. The new formula is terrible and I won't risk using it again.

This used to be so convenient for a quick dye/ refresh but I'm considering going back to the hairdressers and sucking up the cost

I haven’t used the new 734 yet, but won’t be doing so after the changes. Even the colour example on the packaging are way off to what it actually comes out like. So so disappointed

Now the chestnut honey brown is not in the slightest even a hint of brown, but a bright ginger colour, and is more ginger and so much lighter than the no.734 that I would use in the summer months. I’ve not yet tried the no.734 but won’t be as I do not trust this product anymore.

Rated 3 out of 5 by SuziePoo from I had been happily using Casting for 20 years+ on my naturally warm mid brown hair and usually the reds were my favoured shades. A year or so ago I decided to become more copper - so I used 'Amber' every 4 weeks for around 9 months, which was always initially too purply straight after colouring but it faded through the perfect shade before becoming slightly brassy (especially in the sun). I switched to 'Amber Honey' recently which was lovely initially but after 3 washes my roots were noticeably a dusty orange. I repeated it after 2 weeks and the same thing happened again. I've since tried 'Chestnut Honey'.....day1 = very happy and my hairdresser complimented me on it, but one week (3 washes) on its become a definite ginger shade which in bright sunlight looks hideous (because it looks dyed orange- especially at the sides where I have more grey and the colour takes in a far more obvious way!) I feel my next shade might have to be a boring mid brown to neutralise the orange tones before I contemplate my next move.

It has left my hair visibly lighter than previous and is staining bedding and clothing an odd yellow colour. I suspect natural dyes may be doing this. I will not use this again and will be writing to L'Oreal with my concerns. Proceed with caution!

Got confused looking for medium brown now though as it is now called 500 Light Brown. Be careful as it is not , it is medium brown. Their new conditioner does not work for my hair. It left it frizzy and hard to style. The previous honey conditioner was so much better. I wish they had left the previous hair dye alone .

I bought this hair dye to ‘top up’ what I had - my hair was essentially the colour on the box to start with. I was hoping to do my roots and the second photo is the AFTER! It does come out darker than the box colour, but I wanted my hair dark again so I am happy with it. I would say go a shade lighter if you really don't want a dark colour. It does fade slightly with every wash, but after 2 and half months the colour was still looking nice and not too brassy as I used to cover old balayage. Use - Easy to use, gloves are a bit tight and one pair ripped. I needed to use two boxes for full coverage, but my hair is fairly long and quite thick. Grey coverage- not great, if you are looking to cover a substantial amount of grey hair I would avoid this product. My greys are slightly less obvious but still visible. Overall I am happy with how the colour turned out and I have used it twice now. It is very easy to work with and left my hair feeling and looking good.

I’m stuck with hot roots that I’m completely stuck on how to fix .I’m hoping L’Oréal would give me tips on what to do as I’m worried I’ll have to try dye over them but what if it happens again?

It's easy to use, pretty good coverage, and leaves your hair feeling really soft and looking really shiny. I am allergic to lots of things and most hair dye stains my pale skin terribly (always shocks the hairdressers). I am neither allergic to this, nor do I get terrible stained skin. I've seen the bad reviews....not sure why you would complain that a brown hair dye has turned your hair brown. It kind of says it on the box. If you have dark brown hair and want to keep the grey at bay, I think this is a pretty good choice.

Perhaps I had a duff bottle but when I rinsed out my hair, after the 25min wait, I was very surprised to see my grey hairs uncoloured! And the rest of my hair still brown rather than chestnut.

Starts off a little darker than shown on the box, but fine after the second wash. Covers grey for a few weeks. It's very close to my own hair colour, but I use this to tone down my red/ginger highlights, which I don't like with my skin tone.

Emergency late night trip back to Boots with a huge hat to dye my hair again! Please stop selling this shade! At the time I had dark blonde hair with horrible white blonde highlights so i thought this would blend them together more. The product itself did not feel stingy or irritable at all and the process was fairly easy. However, i was expecting a honey blonde colour and instead my hair is now... Ginger. Then again, it did give my hair a glossy look and the colour is quite lovely. If you buy this product i recommend doing a testing patch. If ginger is not your thing i would try something else.

I bought it in chocolate truffle and the colour at first was lovely very rich and glossy (a little darker than the box but then it always is until the first wash). However, unfortunately after just over 2 weeks (8 washes) the colour has disappeared and has washed out completely. I use standard L'Oreal shampoo for reference. A real shame as it's just not feasible to re-colour every fortnight.

Hair feels soft and the smell was nice too. Very pleased.

These dyes have always left my hair silky soft and shiny after using. However, 600 Light Brown was a terrible colour that I would not recommend! My hair had not been dyed for a few months and was therefore my natural mousy brown/light blonde. 600 Light Brown has no depth of colour and has a rather blonde base. My hair does not look very different aside from looking more blonde! Not what I wanted! I am quite sure I have used this colour previously and therefore think L'Oreal may have changed the formula again. Conditioner also seems to be different.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Kamila152 from Darker colour but overall good product I used this in the shade 600 which is light brown, the colour came out a few shades darker at first but after washing it, it did become a bit lighter. My hair was also a bit dry at first but that did pass fairly quickly after washing and conditioning a couple of times. I don't think the colour does match what's said on the box completely and a couple of people have also said they found the colour to look darker than they thought it would but overall I am pleased with how it looks, i didn't find the darker colour to be an issue i really like it. Overall I would recommend buying a shade lighter than what you would like but I think it is a good dye and I was very pleased with how the colour turned out.

I've been back at my natural colour for a while now, maybe since last summer but over winter, it began to look dull so I bought Casting Creme Gloss in Amber to make my natural ginger look more vibrant. The colour I achieved is NOTHING like what is on the box. My hair is now a brown colour with hints of red. I'm so disappointed and upset because I went dark over a year ago and it took a long time for that to come out and now I'm right back to square one because of this hair dye! I've never had any trouble with casting creme gloss before so this really has made me think twice about using it again. I used Nice n Easy last time to help my hair look more natural and that worked a treat so I'd definitely recommend that over this.

It lasts about three weeks depending on how much you wash your hair. The conditioner leaves my hair really shiny and I have used quite a few shades but this chocolate shade blends in very nicely.

But the dye has left my ends suppppppeeeerrr dry, and i only recently jus got rid of my dry ends. Also it has left my naturally wavy/ straight hair really frizzy and it has no shine to it, and i when i put it in a ponytail i could hear many hairs breaking. Disappointed, i had high hopes for this.

I find the colour good but the mixture has a slightly runny consistency so you do need to be very careful with regards to drips. I would recomend this product but suggest being very careful when using it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from Natural-looking colour no. 600 You wouldn't know that this is an artificial colour as it has no odd mahogany, red or purple shades in it, just good old brown, although it does have a nice degree of 'glow' in sunlight.. It covers grey well, so if you're just looking to take a few years off and look natural, this is a good choice. I have dark brown hair, wouldn't really call this a light brown.

I thought I'd get a semi permanent colour as I'm trying to be kind to my hair to grow it. I am truly shocked at how my hair now looks and feels! Not only is it a purpley brown instead of auburn it feels like straw! I am no way new to dying or even bleaching my hair and I have never experienced dry damaged hair like this before. I will never buy this product again and may possibly have to cut my hair again after a lengthy growing process from a pixie crop which breaks my heart.

I decided to go lighter for summer, but the base of CHOCOLATE has red in it, and is quite different! My mistake, but it's not a very 'chocolaty' colour :( Instead, now I have red roots. Will go back to DARK CHOC!

My natural hair colour is light brown that goes fairer in the summer, with 15% grey. I follow the instructions exactly, which is 20 mins on roots, and 5 mins on previously coloured hair. At first the results are a bit dull, but after the first wash the colour is better and continues to lighten. I end up with shimmering blonde tones that look natural. It covers most of the grey but not all, but I think that also makes it look more natural. I used to have my hair coloured professionally, but I prefer the results I get from this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by 123swans from choose the ligher shade if in doubt I picked 5.13 iced truffle over 6.13 Iced Mocha due to my roots being of a mid brown rather than light brown.. however the shade turned out darker, and warmer, than expected so I wish I'd have tried the lighter iced mocha first. Saying this it is a pleasant shade, almost dark brown with just a hint of a deep chocolate colour to it, darker than expected but pretty.

Rated 1 out of 5 by natashalouise95 from a change somewhere? I have used the 'casting' hair colours many times for many years, and I have to say that I am very disappointed. The colour came out a lot darker than expected, when I opted for the lighter option as the box suggests! Also, the main thing - as usual, I carried out a skin test before using the dye and for the 24 duration of the test my skin was fine and I had no reaction so I went ahead and applied it. When the dye was on my head all went well, I had a slight tingling at first but this soon settled which is normal with most hair dyes for me. However, soon after washing the product out and styling (left to dry naturally mainly and no other products used exp heat defence spray), my head started to get extremely itchy. This was about 5 hours after dying my hair and the 5 hours before I had no problems yet suddenly it started itching all over my head and has left me with red, irritated patches and spots which is obviously not what you'd expect from a skin test that had no problems and such easy application. All in all, I am impressed with the ease of application BUT I am not impressed with what has happened after completing the colouring. I have had my hair like this for 4 days with no sign of the itchiness going away. Very disappointed as I have used casting a lot and this has put me off completely.
